President Akufo-Addo elected chairman of ECOWAS

President Akufo-Addo has been elected as the new chairman of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
He was elected to take over from the Niger President, Mahamadou Issoufou who was elected on June 29, 2019.
This was done at the ongoing 57th ECOWAS Summit, which is being held in Niamey, which is the capital of Niger.
His election makes him the 35th President to chair ECOWAS since its inception in 1975.
Nana Addo would lead the ECOWAS body for 1 year before another election would be conducted.
The Economic Community of West African States, also known as ECOWAS, is a regional political and economic union of fifteen countries located in West Africa. Collectively, these countries comprise an area of 5,114,162 km², and in 2015 had an estimated population of over 349 million.
